To the Board of Directors and Executive Leadership of Netflix, Inc.:
For more than seventy years, C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia has introduced children around the world to the gospel story, wrapped in myth and adventure. At the center of it stands Aslan, the great Lion, the “Son of the Emperor-Beyond-the-Sea,” who gives his life to save Narnia and rises again to defeat evil. Lewis wrote Aslan as an illustration of Jesus Christ Himself.
Netflix's adaptation has reportedly reimagined Aslan in a way that strips the character of the very thing Lewis built him to represent, replacing the Christ-figure that families have trusted for generations with a politicized caricature. Whatever the intent, that is how it reads to the many Christians who have loved this story for seventy years: not adaptation, but mockery.
This is not an isolated misstep. It fits a pattern our research has documented for years. Netflix has produced and distributed programming our screening identifies as containing graphic sexual content, including titles marketed as erotic drama; released children's programming introducing LGBTQ themes to audiences as young as seven; sponsored and financially supported LGBTQ advocacy organizations including GLAAD, the Trevor Project, and the Transgender Law Center; publicly backed the Equality Act; and offered employees up to $10,000 in lifetime reimbursement for travel to obtain an abortion, while publicly signing statements opposing state abortion restrictions.
Netflix is free to make these choices. We are equally free to say we will not fund them — and to ask Netflix to stop assuming we will.
This is why we are calling on all Christians to either sell or avoid Netflix in their investments. As investors are part-owners of the companies they invest in, the undersigned refuse to help fund the immoral and anti-Christian agendas that Netflix appears to be so adamant about promoting.
We call on Netflix to:
- Treat works that are important to people of faith, including The Chronicles of Narnia, with the integrity they deserve, rather than as an opportunity to advance an opposing social agenda.
- Stop marketing sexualized and LGBTQ-themed content to children and hosting pornographic material on your site.
- Refrain from using corporate and shareholder resources to fund political and social advocacy that violates a substantial share of your subscribers', employees ', and current shareholders’ worldview and convictions.
We don’t expect everyone to share or abide by our faith and beliefs, but we are asking Netflix to stop assuming our silence, our subscriptions, and through our investments/underwriting.
Sincerely,
